Sperm Created in UK Lab?

July 8, 2009

Scientists in Britain claim to have created sperm in their lab. The tiny swimmers seem to have many characteristics of human sperm, what with heads and tails, chromosomes and proteins. You can see a taped news story here.

The process of creating sperm uses stem cells from human embryos, which are then destroyed. Other scientists debate whether the product created should actually be considered sperm, but regardless, this is fascinating science with enormous ethical implications.

The UK scientists claim they are at least 10 years away from beginning human trials on artificially created sperm. The assumed beneficiaries of the sperm would be men with infertility issues.
