Gain the Honest Exchange Edge!

Honest Exchange helps healthcare, therapy and education professionals add value to practices and programs by changing how and what you communicate about sexual health and sexuality. As a result, your interactions will be more effective whether you are working with patients, students, parents or peers.

My programs combine best practices in adult education, timely sexual health information, and engaging delivery. Participants experience many “ah ha!” moments  while they attain knowledge and skills they can use immediately.

I am an AASECT-Certified Sexuality Educator, an NCAA-approved Health & Safety Grant Speaker, and a New Jersey Professional Development Provider.  My office is in New Jersey, but I would be happy to travel to your location. To maximize your budget, we can coordinate multiple programs in a single visit.

“Melanie Davis’ workshop, “This Will Only Hurt a Little: Taking the Pain out of Talking about Sex” was both a fun and educational exercise that helped my classmates and me open up the discussion about sex. This exposure was extremely helpful in making us comfortable enough to talk about this touchy subject with our patients and in knowing when to use the appropriate language in different settings. The entire experience has made a lasting impression on how I will see and treat my patients.” -Gladston Hackett, 2nd year medical student, UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School

Training Topics

This is a partial list; programs can be tailored and/or developed specifically for you:

    • Exploring the Breadth and Depth of Sexuality
      • This program presents the 5 areas of sexuality and explains how they affect people throughout the lifespan. Sexual values and socio-cultural influences are discussed.
    • It’s Never Too Hot to Handle: How to Keep Cool When Discussing Sensitive Sexual Topics
      • Highly interactive, this program builds comfort with the language of sexuality and sexual health; explores attitudes that hinder dialogue; and provides practical tips for enhanced communication
    • Creating a Welcoming Environment for Sexual Minorities
      • Does your office project a “Heterosexuals Only” message? Learn how to create a safe space for a diverse patient or student population.
    • Presenting a “New Normal” for Sexuality Despite Illness or Disability
      • Creativity, patience, education and adaptation can help patients enjoy sexual activity when health issues interfere with familiar behaviors. This workshop will introduce communication points, sexual aids, and body positions that accommodate a range of health changes.
    • Sex Ed for Nurses
      • This workshop supplements nurses’ medical skills with current information about sexual health issues. It also allows nurses to explore the attitudes and sexual values that affect how they deal with patients’ concerns.
    • How to Take Effective Sexual Histories
      • A comprehensive sexual history can provide important insights into a patient’s sexual and overall health while helping you screen for high-risk behaviors. The process of history taking will impact your patient’s trust in you and will set the stage for future communication. This workshop builds practical skills and challenges attitudes that may inadvertently restrain patient honesty.
